PEMBREY
SUNDAY RACE 2
It's raining hard, all the teams where looking for a gap in the weather with hope that it may clear, which wasn’t to be. So wet tyres it is, although because the track did seem to be drying a couple or so drivers/teams decided to go on dry tyres, something I may have done if I was feeling more confident, but felt stay with the wet tyres, be safe and bring it home. My thoughts for the start this time were, no heroics! We have had a reasonable first weekends racing, so bring the car home without damage, by the way this time my start was rubbish (sorry). I had an uneventful race and brought the Fusion Mini home unscathed, finishing 5th in class. My thoughts on the weekend are, I still have a bit to learn, as I already said, it will take me a few races to be where we want the Fusion Mini to be.

SNETTERTON
12th 13th MAY ROUND 3 & 4.
The Mini's travel to Snetterton Norfolk for Rounds 3 & 4 of the Championship. This meeting is known as the Mini Festival, which usually attracts a reasonable crowd, with many of the spectators arriving in their own model of these iconic cars. The Mini Festival Features Mini’s from the 1960’s right up to the todays model. This is a meeting for the enthusiast. I haven’t been to Snetterton since I was the Circuit Manager there in the 1990’s. I’m looking forward to hopefully bumping into the odd person that I knew way back then. The circuit has changed in all recognition since I was there, so another one to get to grips with, we travel up on the Friday for a half days testing, to learn the circuit. I’m looking forward to racing the FUSION-EVENTS.COM Mini at Snetterton, with the hope of making more improvements.

THRUXTON
2nd and 3rd June
A great weekend at Thruxton’s 50th Anniversary, the weather was superb with wall to wall sunshine, the racing was amazing with so much for the enthusiast to see both on the track and on display The FUSION-EVENTS MINI was a joy to drive, and its fair to say I’m now feeling really at home in the car. I qualified 4th in my class I’m not quite sure where I finished in the race as there was a crash. So all in all a reasonable result, I cant wait until the next round at Brands.

BRANDS HATCH
25th and 26th August
Hopes were high for this one, and very important too, as Hospitality was booked for Major sponsor Fusion-Events.com on the Sunday.

I had my strategy for qualifying, and felt in a good place, looking forward to hopefully my best qualifying of the year, after all Brands is my circuit, I was in a positive mood.

Qualifying day was dry and overcast, there we were 28 Minis in the collection area all waiting to do our best in the following 30 minutes of qualifying. My first 3 or 4 laps were to bring the tyres up to temperature and get my eye in, by lap (4) I was third quickest in class, this made me feel good because I felt I could still reduce my lap times. Lap (5) I had managed to get myself a bit of space from the car in front of me, knowing if it was a clean lap this would be my best time so far. As I turned into Clearways, a right hand corner that leads on the start finish line, the driver of the mini in front of me, which I was catching, lost control and went into a spin, initially spinning away from me, so I decided to keep my foot in as I knew this would be a good lap, as I speeded past, the spinning mini decided to change direction and slam into the Fusion Mini. I couldn’t believe what had happened, I was left to spin out into the infield with a very damaged car. The car was recovered and taken back to our spot in the Paddock, we all examined the car, it was obvious the Fusion Mini would take no further part in the weekend racing.

Damage report and repair progress as at 1st September 2018. The Team have stripped the Mini down to almost a shell. The Fusion Mini has damage to the front Subframe, floor, passenger side wing. Thankfully engine and radiator managed to stay damage free. The car must go on a jig to square it up, then it’s a matter of rebuilding the car.
I will keep you posted, your Driver Rick Shortle.
